Even though policymakers constantly inform consumers that essential goods may not come to a stage where they are unavailable, the world had witnessed people gathering around in large crowds buying in a state of panic, during the initial advent of the pandemic. While hand sanitizers, gloves, and masks were sold out when people started purchasing in bulk, growing rice and noodles in Asia vanished from the shelves, there was a moment where it was difficult to spot flour in Europe.

While the mass hysteria almost came to a stop, Tesco plc. , a British multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer in England, has now doubled its online deliveries as supermarkets brace for a second panic buy wave. The inventory which was at around 600,000 was up-scaled to 1.5 million over the weekend. That was too fully booked till Wednesday.

The store governors have said that they have ample inventory and supplies for everyone, as the strict lockdown measures spread across the country. The big chain stores do not want people to buy in panic and to witness the empty bare shelves that like they did in March.

This panic buying comes across as over 11 million people began procuring supplies over the renewed lockdown measures in the North West, North East, Midlands, and West Yorkshire.

Other major retailers such as Sainsbury’s and Ocado also highlighted the ‘high demand’ and a three-day waiting list for home deliveries, respectively. The fourth-largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom, Morrisons has already tightened the social distancing measures at around 500 stores.

Other reports of panic buying also included the shopping for Christmas turkeys. Sainsbury’s reported the searches for Christmas have risen to four times relative to the previous year.

Over the last few weeks, stores have been observing the increase in people. While they were not prepared for the first-time panic purchases, they surely are now.
