- The solar facilities would supply energy to Amazon Web Services data centers and fulfillment network in Europe.
- Amazon has audacious plan to outdo Paris agreement by going carbon neutral by 2040.
Amazon has revealed plans of new renewable projects—two of them in the U.S. and one in Spain. Th solar facilities in the U.S. will be in Illinois, Lee Country and North Virginia, and will amount to a combined capacity of 180MW and generate about 400,000MWh of electricity per year.
As per sources familiar with the knowledge of the matter, the project in Spain is expected to be southeast of the city of Seville, having the capacity of 149 megawatts (MW).
According to Amazon, the solar facilities would supply energy to Amazon Web Services data centers and fulfillment network in Europe. Even though Amazon is pushing to the limits to green its operation by the development of renewable energy facilities, it is not unscathed from criticism.
Reliable report claim that Amazon has received flak for showing lackadaisical approach towards environmental commitments. People aware of the situation have castigated Amazon stating the tech giant ‘contradicts itself.’ The firm has been accused of adopting renewable energy on one hand, while propelling fossil fuel usage via ensuring AWS from delivery trucks on the other hand.
Coming as a huge sigh of relief, the three new projects are expected to help curb Amazon’s carbon footprint, claim sources. These robust efforts are believed to massively complement Amazon’s goal of running operation entirely on renewable energy by 2030.
Reportedly, Amazon has an audacious plan to outdo Paris agreement by going carbon neutral by 2040. Amazon has also co-founded the much-talked about initiative—the Climate Pledge—asking signatories to go carbon neutral across their businesses in the next two decades.
