CaaMTech, Leibniz Institute to research ‘magic mushrooms’ composition

The collaborative research is aimed at filling gaps in the scientific understanding of chemical structure of psychedelic mushrooms.

In line with the ongoing strategic measures in the chemical industry, a classic drug discovery and lead optimization company- CaaMTech has reportedly announced entering into a collaborative research agreement with the HKI or Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, in an attempt to research the compositions of psychedelic mushroom.

Speculations have it that Prof. Dr. Dirk Hoffmeister, Head of Research Group Pharmaceutical Microbiology, would lead the research on behalf of the Leibniz Institute. As per reliable sources, the collaborative research is barely aimed at filling the voids in the scientific understanding of the chemical composition of psychedelic psilocybin-containing mushrooms, also regarded as ‘magic mushrooms’.

Magic mushrooms have over the years been undergoing a wave of new research. Recently, they have been legalized in various US jurisdictions and Oregon voters moved to authorize psychotherapy using these fungi in a November ballot measure.

Moreover, it has been well predicted that the research, which is being conducted with Dr. Hoffmeister’s team at Leibniz Institute would, in conjugation with other work, study the chemical variability within and between the magic mushroom strains.

Commenting on the matter, Dr. Andrew Chadeayne, the CEO of CaaMTech, stated that identifying the chemical composition of magic mushrooms would allow the company to quantifiably differentiate its effects from pure psilocybin and leverage its benefits. For the record, psilocybin is one of the many tryptamines comprised in magic mushrooms.

Dr. Hoffmeister cited that metabolic outlining of these fungi stands to be an exciting venture. However, a more global view on these mushrooms’ metabolic diversity has yet to be undertaken, with the need for people to understand their effects. He further added that from the academic perspective, this research would also potentially explain as to how nature has advanced these compounds.
