- CATL has revealed that it has been able to develop a battery that can last up to 2 million km’s for a period of 16 years.
- The company has already inked an agreement with Tesla to supply batteries to the EV manufacturer for a period of 2 years.
The Chinese battery manufacturer for vehicles Contemporary Amperex technology Limited (CATL) has announced that it has taken strides towards developing a car battery that can last up to 2 million kilometers within a period of 16 years. Most electric battery manufacturers of the past have developed batteries that have warranties over a running distance of 96,000 to 240,000 kilometers for a period of 3 to 8 years.
Zeng Yuqun, Chairman at CATL has revealed that this battery by CATL is ready to hit the market in the near future. He said that if an order is placed for the battery, the company is ready to fulfill that order and added that the production of battery would incur a 10% additional cost on the buyer than the current products.
It has been rumored in the past that this battery has been developed by CATL in collaboration with Tesla. Although, this news has not yet been confirmed but if it turns out to be true then Tesla could gain a significantly healthy advantage over its competitors as battery life is considered one of the most important factors in electric car technology adoption.
An agreement has recently been inked between CATL and Tesla for supplying batteries to the car manufacturer for a period of 2 years. CATL is also currently working with companies like Honda, Daimler, Toyota, BMW and Volkswagen who has recently signed an agreement with Ford pertaining to Electric Vehicles.
Another company currently working towards making significant strides in EV market is General Motors, that recently announced it is working towards manufacturing a million mile (1.6 million km) battery.
It is not yet clear at this moment if there is another Automobile company other than Tesla that has signed an agreement with CATL. Also, the details relating to how has the battery been manufactured and what material has it been made of has not been revealed so far which makes it unclear as to how the battery manufacturer plans to coax 2 million km’s out of it.
Zeng Yuqun also revealed that Electric Vehicle sales will jump up next year due to pent up demand from COVID-19 crisis and has presented an optimistic view for next year saying the company is confident that COVID-19 crisis will not play a major role in EV market next year.
