- The project marks Siemens Gamesa’s first venture in Africa along with the participation and leadership of an African investor.
- The wind farm is expected to commence operations from mid-2021
Siemens Gamesa Renewables Energy SA has reportedly announced the development of a wind farm of 59MW capacity in Djibouti situated in East Africa.
Apparently, Siemens Gamesa will use 17 of its SG 3.4-132 wind turbines on a 395-hectare field near the Goubet cove found in the Gulf of Tadjoura to construct the wind farm.
For the record, the wind farm project is set to be the nation’s first renewable energy platform which will increase the prevailing installed power generation capacity in Djibouti by two folds.
As a part of the project, 10 km of internal tracks and roads, electricity interconnection and civil work will be carried out. The company has also initiated to maintain the wind farm for a minimum period of ten years and may renew it afterward.
Apparently, a group of four leading companies are leading the construction. These include the Dutch Development Bank FMO, Africa Finance Corporation, Climate Investor One and Great Horn Investment Holdings – a local firm.
The renewable wind energy project by Siemens Gamesa is an initiative under national renewable energy development program to facilitate clean supply of energy, lower the electricity cost and encourage the population of the country which is under one million along with its major industries to accelerate economic growth and provide electrical independence.
Citing sources, the project is aided by the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency operating under the World Bank. The electricity produced will be sold to the consumers by the consortium to Electricite de Djibouti- a national power generation firm for a time period of 25 years.
Even though Djibouti carries robust cross border export and resource availability potential, there are close to 110,000 households across the nation without electricity.
