INEOS Group Ltd, a British multinational electrochemical solutions firm, has reportedly announced plans to invest more than €2 billion towards electrolysis projects to produce green, zero-carbon hydrogen throughout Europe. The firm's first plants would be constructed in Germany, Belgium, and Norway with investments planned in the United Kingdom and France as well.

The first plant to be developed would be a 20MW electrolyzer in Norway that would create clean hydrogen using water electrolysis fueled by zero-carbon electricity. According to the company, this project will result in a minimum reduction of 22,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year by lowering the carbon footprint of the company’s operations at Rafnes and acting as a hub to deliver hydrogen to the transport industry of Norway.

Meanwhile, INEOS plans to develop a bigger 100MW electrolyzer to generate green hydrogen at its Koln facility in Germany. The project will aid in the decarbonization of INEOS's activities at the site. The hydrogen produced by the unit will be utilized to produce green ammonia.

The Koln initiative will reduce carbon emissions by more than 120,000 tons per year. It will also provide the potential for the development of E-Fuels on a large scale through Power-to-Methanol applications.

INEOS is working on other projects in France, the United Kingdom, and Belgium, and the company soon intends to announce new collaborations with prominent organizations interested in the development of novel hydrogen applications.

Geir Tuft, head of INOVYN, stated that INEOS is ideally positioned to play a leading role in creating these new prospects, which are being driven by increasing demand for inexpensive, low-carbon energy sources paired with INOVYN's expertise in managing large-scale electrolysis.

The INEOS hydrogen operation will be headquartered in the United Kingdom, with the goal of increasing capacity to generate hydrogen throughout the INEOS chain of sites in Europe, as well as partner locations where hydrogen may expedite energy decarbonization.
