New bio-based polymer production plant to create 200 jobs in Singapore

In order to manufacture high-performance polymers, a new bio-factory is reportedly being constructed on Singapore’s Jurong Island, which might result in the creation of over 200 new employment opportunities.

According to reports, the new 10-hectare plant, being built by Arkema, a chemical and advanced materials manufacturer, will start its operations within the first half of 2022. Arkema plans to produce bio-based polyamide 11 material manufactured from castor beans in the factory.

The long-lasting plastic substance is utilized in a variety of fast-growing industries, including 3D printing, new energy vehicles, consumer products, and electronics.

In a media announcement on Tuesday (22 June) Arkema, headquartered in France, stated that it has begun the final construction phase for the planned bio-factory

According to Marc Schuller, Arkema's Chief Operating Officer, the facility will also generate employment in the supply chain, finance, digitalization, business process management, technological research, and marketing sectors, apart from creating high-skilled roles for plant maintenance, manufacturing, and other processes.

Schuller also stated that the facility will play an important role in allowing manufacturers throughout Asia, who are looking for high-performance materials and solutions to promote sustainability within their businesses, to develop recyclable, sustainable goods from the start. As a result, the plant is pegged to transform Asia's sustainability landscape completely.

Including investment in downstream polymer capacities in China, Arkema's entire investment in the region accounts to around €450 million (S$721 million). This is also the company's largest investment to date.

Beh Swan Gin, chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board, openly welcomed Arkema's decision to set up a production plant in Singapore that would support clients who manufacture environment-friendly goods.

Dr. Beh stated that the investment demonstrates how Singapore is using its innovation and advanced manufacturing capabilities to meet green growth prospects, including the increasing global need for sustainable as well as high-performance chemicals and materials.
