American multinational ride-hailing major Uber Technologies has reportedly announced the launch of a new feature on its food delivery platform, Uber Eats. This new feature enables customers in U.S. and Canada to order food from restaurants owned by black people.
Uber has launched this feature in response to the nationwide protests in the U.S. citing the death of George Floyd, an African-American man, in police custody. This incident has turned out to be the recent flashpoint for outrage over police brutality against African-Americans and has evoked calls to extend support to black communities and business establishments in solidarity.
For the uninitiated, Uber Technologies is a multinational ride-hailing company founded in 2009. The company has its headquarters in San Francisco, United States, and offers a variety of services including ride service hailing, peer-to-peer ridesharing and food delivery. Its subsidiaries include deCarta, Uber Eats, Otto, Careem, and others.
As per sources, now, customers opening the Uber Eats app in U.S. and Canada will view a banner reading ‘Support Black-owned restaurants’ in addition to a list comprising nearby restaurants. According to a statement on the app, the delivery fees for those orders will be temporarily waived.
Uber Technologies has further explained that the new feature has been introduced citing requests from customers and the list of restaurants has been compiled by various Uber employees based on publicly available sources.
Uber Inc., has said that it does not collect information about race while including restaurants on its platform. It has also stated that restaurants were earlier informed about the program and are free to opt out or cite other black-owned restaurants that have not yet been included.
